Pocahontas Classic provides hot fun in the summertime

The Quivira Women Golf Association’s golf season is heating up as fast the summer temperatures.

The guest day on May 25 was hosted by Betsy Vossman and Lexa Carr. The theme was “Golf in Provence.” Winners of the special events were Sandy Whitaker, closest to the Eiffel Tower on No. 10, and Marti Hembre, inside the wine bottle on No. 7. Winning teams included Pam Bramlett, Tami Dean, Joanie Bergman and Debbie Kremers, first; Sandra Karley, Sondra Jordan, Anita Link and Mary Kolich, second; and Jolene Held, June Adams, Loretta Hoover and Elaine Brady, third.

QWGA members and guests enjoyed the three-day Pocahontas Classic on June 21-23. Despite the extreme heat, women enjoyed three days of match play golf, a skills challenge fund-raiser for First Tee, food, fellowship and fun.

This year’s tournament was co-chaired by Christina Gomer and Sandra Karley. Flight winners were: First flight: Christina Gomer and Christine Bigley, first; Jolene Held and DJ DeHardt, second; and Peggy Nail and Marti Hembree, third; second flight: Anita Link and Mary Kolich, first; Cathy Goodger and Kay Johnson, second; and Misti Jones and Emily Borovetz, third; third flight: Sandra Karley and Sondra Jordan, first; Betsy Vossman and Katie Harms, second; and Judy Stanion and Chris Cali, third; fourth flight: Janice Chandler and Marcia Anciaux, first; Connie Sheppard and Karen Sheppard, second; and Dawn Dinneen and Kristi Plumb, third; fifth flight; Susan Castle and Debbie Scrivner, first; Linda Cruse and Janet Flack, second; and Gail Rone and Patty Saragusa, third; sixth flight: Karen Folsom and Shirley Palmer, first; Lynne Resech and Jan Peak, second; and Betty McAnany and Charleen Duffy, third; and seventh flight: Ginny McDaniel and Marsha Rametta, first; Lisa Coffman and Nicole Widmer, second; and Marge Barnett and Carol Mulvenon, third.

Ginny McDaniel and Marsha Rametta were overall match play champions with the high score of 31 1/2. Skills challenge winners were Karen Folsom and Shirley Palmer, first; Jolene Held and DJ DeHardt, second; and Marla Ainsworth and Tami Dean, third.

Hole event winners for the three days were Tami Dean and Kristi Plumb, closest to the hole; Jolene Held and Katie Harms, longest drive; and Lisa Coffman, Marcia Anciaux and Helen Emmott, longest putt.

This year’s derby winners were Anita Link and Mary Kolich, win; Sandra Karley and Sondra Jordan, place; and Susan Castle and Debbie Scrivner, show.
