Around the House. . . Committee that is – May 2012

By Chris Becicka
It’s May. It’s May. And things are a-happenin’ so fast you really will have to keep up via E-News this month.
First, somewhere among these pages you will see pictures of the winners and a few of their desserts from the first ever Sweet Taste of Success, a dessert contest. It was a delicious and fun evening for the tasters. Maybe next we’ll do mac ’n’cheese or breakfast casseroles or . . . oh, the possibilities are endless. The judge’s choice winner, a small pot or two by Linda Segebrecht, should be available this month. Be sure to ask for it.

Second, we’ll be into the third event for Saturday Night Fever! You remember: the high stakes, high prize drawing from the bingo cage every Saturday at 6 p.m. in the bar. Our first one was April 20 when Jim Lewis’ name was selected. He could have won 50 big one$ (in house credit), but instead, his name was reentered for the following weeks as the pot grows by 50 bucks a week. Be there or be square; someone HAS to win, maybe you. No purchase necessary to win, but you know what we’re hoping . . . hang out with us for a while!

Now that I have your attention by talking about money, I want to tell you to be on the lookout for the annual House survey. We need to measure improvement, get your feedback, give everyone a chance to speak up. (Of course, you also have house@quiviralake.com for that purpose as well.) It’ll come to you by email sometime this month. If you don’t want to respond electronically, we will have surveys printed off available in Beth’s office and at the front desk in the club house with envelopes for you to seal and return to Beth’s office, where the big ballot box will await them.  Or you can print off the survey yourself. Surveys are totally anonymous; we’ll see only the results. Please do respond. If you want a chance to win one free dinner, we’ll see those names, but it’s a separate question compilation, and they are not coordinated to your answers. Anyway, please do respond!

Fourth, Really Big News. Sunset Terrace. Sunset Terrace. It’s Time! To show our appreciation for our members, we’re sponsoring a Garden Party. Join us at 5:30–7:00 p.m. on Sat., May 19. Wear a (preferably hand-decorated) hat–think Kentucky Derbyish. Prizes for prettiest, silliest, most creative, etc. Hat I’m talking about here. Plus, we will recognize the financial donors to the space. And, guess we’ll have to incorporate Saturday Night Fever! The new stairs to the west should be completed. We’ll enjoy free appetizers, admire the scenery and the beautiful Garden Club filled urns, chat and co-mingle legally. Member bar. Be watching your email for more details.

Oh, and really cool, we should be hoisting the (temporary) Sunset Terrace Official Flag for the first time. Its purpose is to tell you if the Sunset Terrace is open for business. If it’s there–yes, we’re open. If it’s late at night and someone goes out to take down the flag, it’s time for you to meander home. We plan to be open more often this year, Sunday barbeques will begin the end of the month and if we do not have a paid booking for Friday or Saturday night, weather permitting, we’ll be open.

We welcome several new house committee members: Steve Terbovich is the new vice-chair; and Mary Linda Boling, Gayle Best and Jan Sidelnik have joined our ranks this spring. We have added advisory members, too: Ev Bates, Charlene Brennan, Pam Gillis, Mendy Jarman, John Scavuzzo and Mary Weigel. They also serve as ears to the community, just like the rest of us. Now stop visualizing that metaphor.

Moving to another sensory experience, soon you’ll see something new on the way in to our dining room, thanks to the Photography Club. You’ll see more about this later, but this will be a bi-monthly (probably), rotating exhibit for which our own members will be supplying the photos. Do pause and take in the skills and feeling a photograph can evoke. The lovely Jim Hamil watercolor will sidle over to the right side of the entrance. When was the last time you really looked at it?

That’s it for now. The May flowers are a-bloomin’! Enjoy.
Chris Becicka . . . and Steve Terbovich, Shirley Barr, Mary Linda Boling, Jackie Jones, Pat Sandow, Jan Sidelnik , Steve Roellchen, Pat Wahlstedt and Lauren White.
