Big news about The Wild Wild Quivira Pontoon Crawl on September 8: 1. Come to Blessing Park to hear toe-tapping music by “The Bottom Feeders” during the Car Show. Wear your Western Gear! 2. An Amateur BBQ Contest is on, so fire up those smokers! 3. Boots are made for dancin’ to “The Torres Band” with our own Rick Gillis from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Sunset Terrace.
As most of you know, the Garden Club puts on this big fund raiser in order to beautify our common grounds by providing the funds for flowers, trees and shrubs. Your support means everything to our community, and we always appreciate your wonderful attendance. It’s our big party of the year!
This year, the Crawl will have a western theme. An amateur Barbeque Contest will be taking place with judging at 3 p.m. at Blessing Park on Sat., , Sept. 8. Everyone wishing to take part in this contest by entering the BBQ Contest or just helping us BBQ the meats needs to contact Julia Cotter, Coordinator for this year’s Pontoon Crawl, at juliaacotter@gmail.com or 913-660-8160 by August 8. The Garden Club will purchase the pork and beef products to be prepared for the Barbeque.

The Torres, a “60s garage band grown up,” will make its first-ever Lake Quivira appearance on the Sunset Terrace from 8 to 11. All seven original members of the band will be performing hits from the 60s and early 70s.

After the judging, the smoked meats will be taken to the Clubhouse and prepared for serving. The winners will be announced during the band’s break that evening. All contestants will get one free Pontoon Crawl ticket to thank them for participating and providing the preparation of the meat portion of our dinner. We hope to see many BBQers down at Blessing Park, firing up their grills and smokers, while the Car Show takes place at the east end of the park. There will be a drink station there as well.
Incorporating a car show was such a big hit last year, and some were asking in January if we would have it again this year. We loved seeing those beauties displayed with pride, so yes, it is on! The Car Show will be expanded this year, with “People’s Choice” prizes for various divisions.
We have decided to ask an entry fee of $20 so we can obtain prizes and offer participants a more up-scale car show. (Pat has been visiting other car shows for ideas.) We will designate a charity for any monies collected and not used. Each participant may enter more than one vehicle. We will give you one Pontoon Crawl ticket at ½ price ($17.50) should you choose to attend the dinner and Crawl event.
Pat Warner will be in charge of this portion of the event. Please e-mail or call Pat for an entry form to be sent to you. Her contact info is: silverfox533@gmail.com or cell: 913-481-5589. Deadline for entries is September 1. You may invite outsiders who you know to enter their vehicles. They will be your responsibility while inside our gates. Please submit all information about your vehicle(s). If you have a sign for yours already, please let me know. You will be given an entry number once we receive your entry fee. The hours of the “Pride of the Ride” will be 2 to 5 p.m., September 8, with our parade of vehicles at 5:15. Vehicles of all makes and years may be entered–cars, trucks, motorcycles and yes, even jazzed up golf carts may be entered. Let’s make it fun! We need your commitment to make this an exciting and interesting afternoon. Prizes will be awarded during the band break that evening.
So, get your Western gear out of the trunk. You might want to leave the six shooters at home, however!
