Things to ask your lawn care provider to help reduce nutrient pollution in lakes, rivers and streams

By Jamie Pribyl for the City of Lake Quivira’s Stormwater Management Program

Ask your lawn care provider about their water quality conservation practices when it comes to the amount, type, placement and timing of fertilizers.
* Ask them to avoid application of fertilizers during or just prior to a rain.
* Ask that they carefully blow any fertilizer back into the yard that has landed in the street, sidewalk or driveway during application.
* Ask that they also remove grass clippings and leaves from the street with the caveat that these items are not blown into storm drains or into the lake.
* Ask that they exercise great caution when applying fertilizer to areas of your lawn that lie close to the lake or to storm drains and French drains.
