Jeanne McGrath, Pontoon Chair 2017
Mark Twain would be delighted to see his book come back to vibrant life at Lake Quiviran’s annual Pontoon Crawl on Sat., Aug. 26.! The Riverwalk was alive with LQ folks milling around Huck Finn’s raft, strolling the banks of the River Q, watching an outdoor movie, sashaying by the saloon bar for a sip of whiskey and dancing under the stars to the music of Private Stock. We ordered up perfect weather for the evening, and we were not disappointed!
John and Larie Nelson introduced a new concept this year, the Great Quivira Cardboard Boat Race. We had three entries this year, but I’ll bet next year we’ll have many more. There were fans everywhere cheering the contestants on! The Nelsons have brought new energy to the lake, and if you’ve noticed, they seem to be everywhere, always with a helping hand. Huck Finn’s adventures on the River Q Pontoon Crawl 2017 was a blast.
Mary Linda Boling created our cool graphics for the invitations and banners, and Kristie Brady printed them up for us, no charge! Thanks to both of you ladies for your time and talents. Gayle Best, as usual, worked endless hours. Her sage advice and guidance were much appreciated.
Many thanks to all the donations we received this year. Christy Heller, sponsorship chair, delivered in spades. Our drink mixologists, Bryan and Jodi Albers, sponsored and concocted this year’s sailing dock grog and they hit it big with their offering two choices, blackberry infused vodka / bourbon lemonade. At Blessing Park, the Albers featured a lovely sangria that was a pleasant surprise, along with the free beer selections. Many thanks to Manu and Dawn Rattan for their generous donation of liquor, beer and wine.
Food chair, Randy Reed, working with Chef Micheal, created a mouth-watering menu that was utterly delicious and put comfort food at the top of the chart. You rocked it, Chef!
Colleen Irwin, head of decorations, set her volunteers to work and created the most unique decorations, complete with famous quotes from Mark Twain surrounding our paths. Fabric banners blowing in the breeze reminded us of days gone by. Thank you for all your efforts in making the beach and Blessing Park a re-creation of 1840’s mid America. Joe and Lisa Walsh were our game show hosts for the evening, offering beer pong and flip cup for a little contemporary fun.
PontoonCrawl is an enjoyable fund raiser Garden Club has produced for many years. It has morphed along the way, changed a from its beginnings, but is still one of the best parties thrown here at Lake Quivira. Whatever profits are realized , garden club turns them over to the community in beautifying the grounds and enhancing our Clubhouse facade and interior.
If you attended this year, thank you for your presence. You helped make the night magical. If you were unable to attend but still donated, we thank you for that, as well. Special thanks to Ron Bower and the crew he lined up for the photos. Be sure to view your memories on line.
Thanks to everyone who played a part. Now, for next year’s theme. To be continued. . .
